How to get an ElevenLabs API key for AI voices and text to speech

Q: The API key you used is missing the permission text_to_speech to execute this operation.

The most common one. ElevenLabs starts every new key with Restrict Key on and every endpoint on No Access, so a key made without changing anything can't read aloud. On API Keys, choose the key's ⋯, then Edit, set Text to Speech to Access and Voices to Read, and choose Save Changes. The key itself doesn't change, so there's nothing to paste again. Hover the ⓘ next to a key's name to see what it can do. If narration works but Import doesn't ("missing the "Voices: Read" permission"), it's the Voices switch alone.

The key has spent the number typed into Per credit refresh period when it was made, even if your account still has credit (the message names the key). On API Keys, choose the key's ⋯, then Edit, raise the number or clear it, and choose Save Changes.

PolyCog narrates with ElevenLabs' eleven_flash_v2_5 model. If ElevenLabs retires it, PolyCog moves to its replacement; until then nothing on your side fixes this. Tell us through the contact link at the foot of this page.

About eight minutes and $10. Make an ElevenLabs account, add $10 of prepaid credit on top of the free plan, and create a key that can only read text aloud and list your voices. Nothing renews, and the credit lasts a year. You pay ElevenLabs directly at their prices. PolyCog adds nothing.

A new key can't do anything until you switch two things on

ElevenLabs starts every new key with Restrict Key on and every permission set to No Access. Choose Create Key straight away and PolyCog can't read anything aloud. Step 3 switches on the only two PolyCog needs: Text to Speech and Voices: Read.

Do you need this key at all?PolyCog Pro already reads answers aloud in six voices on PolyCog's own ElevenLabs account, up to a daily allowance of about 5,000 characters (a few long answers). Your own key removes that limit and lets you use every voice on your ElevenLabs account, including voices you've cloned. On the free PolyCog plan, narration isn't available with or without a key.

Make an ElevenLabs account

Go to elevenlabs.io and choose Sign up. The quickest way in is Sign up with Google. To use an email address instead, type it and a password (at least 8 characters with a number and a special character), tick the box that agrees to the terms, and choose Sign up. ElevenLabs emails you a link: choose Verify email, then sign in once more with the same email and password to finish. Five short screens follow. Pick either platform (it doesn't matter for the key), tick the box that says you're 18 or older, and choose Skip on the rest. The last one offers paid plans: you don't need one, so choose Skip.

The email comes from ElevenLabs <no-reply@…> with the subject "Verify your email for ElevenLabs". In our test it reached the inbox within a minute. If it doesn't, check Spam, or choose Resend once its countdown ends.
After Verify email, ElevenLabs asks you to sign in once more. That's normal: it's how the verification finishes.
ElevenCreative or ElevenAgents: pick either. The key lives in a third platform, ElevenAPI, and step 3 goes straight there.
The plan screen at the end is optional. Skip keeps you on the Free plan; step 2 adds credit instead.

$10 is the smallest top-up; it buys 27,472 credits, about 200,000 characters of narration, plus sales tax where it applies ($10.98 in our US test). The free plan's monthly credits are used first.
Over the API, ElevenLabs refuses most Voice Library voices to free accounts with no credit, and can switch them off when they're used from a shared server like PolyCog's. Credit avoids both: our test account narrated fine once it had credit.
Auto Top Up is off unless you switch it on. Its form pre-fills "top up by $20 when the balance drops below $10", with a monthly spend cap you can leave blank. Leave it off and the $10 is the most PolyCog can ever spend.
Credit lasts 12 months. At zero, narration stops: there's no bill afterwards.
ElevenLabs suggests two-step verification "to prevent abuse of account funds". It's worth switching on.

Make a PolyCog key and copy it

At the bottom of the left menu, choose Switch beside the platform name and pick ElevenAPI, then choose API Keys under Configure (or use the link below). Choose + Create Key. Type PolyCog as the Name and leave Expire After on Never. Restrict Key is on and every endpoint starts at No Access: set Text to Speech to Access, then scroll down and set Voices to Read. Leave the rest alone, and leave Per credit refresh period empty (Unlimited): your balance is already the limit. Choose Create Key, then Copy to Clipboard before you close the box.

You only see it onceThe key starts with sk_. Paste it straight into PolyCog (next step) or somewhere safe. Lost it? Make another with Create Key and delete the old one. Anyone with the key can spend your credit.

Text to Speech lets PolyCog read answers aloud. Voices: Read lets it list and check your voices for Import. Neither can clone, change or delete anything.
Got a switch wrong? The key's ⋯ › Edit changes its permissions later, and there's nothing to paste again. Hover the ⓘ next to its name to see what it can do.
Leave Restrict by IP address off, and Auto-disable if leaked on (both are the defaults).

The list shows NAME (ⓘ = its permissions), KEY (last four), CREATED, EXPIRES and an ENABLED switch; ⋯ offers Edit (Save Changes), Copy Key ID and Delete. Leave Restrict by IP address off: PolyCog calls ElevenLabs from its own server, and that address isn't published. These are user keys; Service Accounts aren't needed.

Keys stay in the browser you saved them in. If you switch on key sync, they're encrypted and stored with your account so your other devices get them too.

Profile › Keys › ElevenLabs API key › Save keys. The box refuses a paste that can't be a key (a space inside, a key pasted twice, anything but sk_ + 48 hex) and says why. A new key is tested at once: a three-character narration (about a credit) and GET /v1/voices. Per-key on/off switch (off = PolyCog goes back to its shared narration key and the six built-in voices). Sync is optional (AES-256 at rest).

Ask any question, then hover an answer: the speaker sits next to Copy, above the answer (on a phone it's always there). Press it. After a second or two it reads the answer aloud; that means the key and the credit both work. The ⌄ next to it picks that bot's voice. Then open Profile › Settings › Narration Voices and choose Import from ElevenLabs…: the voices on your ElevenLabs account appear, and ＋ Add puts one in every speaker menu. narrate.php posts to api.elevenlabs.io/v1/text-to-speech/{voice} with model_id: eleven_flash_v2_5 (stability 0.5, similarity 0.75), markdown and code stripped, a 10,000-character cap, the key in xi-api-key. Your key goes first; if the box is empty or switched off, PolyCog falls back to its shared key and the six built-in voices (daily cap). Import calls GET /v1/voices; Verify & Add calls GET /v1/voices/{id}. ElevenAPI's Request Log lists each call. PolyCog narrates with ElevenLabs' Flash v2.5 voice model at $0.05 per 1,000 characters. Code blocks and link addresses are skipped, so a long technical answer costs less than its length suggests. Narrating the same answer twice is billed twice.

Measured on Sep 27, 2026: a 57-character answer used 8 credits, which is ElevenLabs' listed Flash price of $0.05 per 1,000 characters at its $3.64-per-10,000-credit top-up rate. An hour of audio is roughly 60,000 characters.

Troubleshooting

Find the words from the message PolyCog shows when you press the speaker, under the ElevenLabs box after you save a key, or in Settings › Narration Voices.

Invalid API key401 · invalid_api_key · PolyCog shows "ElevenLabs doesn't recognise this API key."

ElevenLabs doesn't recognise the key PolyCog sent: a character went missing or extra text got in when you pasted it, the key was deleted, or its Enabled switch on API Keys is off. In PolyCog, click into the ElevenLabs box, select everything (Ctrl+A) and delete it, then paste again. A key is 51 characters: sk_ and 48 letters and numbers. If that doesn't fix it, make a new key (step 3): ElevenLabs shows a key only once.

Your account is out of credit: the free plan's monthly credits and your prepaid balance are both used up, or too low for this answer. Top up on Subscription › ElevenAPI › + Add credits (step 2), or wait for the free credits to renew.
A long answer needs more credits than a short one, so a short answer can still play when a long one can't.
If the message says "your API key (the key's name) quota", it's the key's own limit, not your account: see the next item.

ElevenLabs keeps most Voice Library voices for paying accounts when they're used from an app. Add prepaid credit or pick a paid plan (step 2). With $10 of credit on the free plan, our test account narrated PolyCog's built-in voices without a problem.

Unusual activity detected. Free Tier usage disabled.401 · a free account used from a shared server · PolyCog shows "ElevenLabs switched off free-plan use on this account."

ElevenLabs' abuse check sometimes switches off free accounts that are used from a shared or data-centre address, and every PolyCog narration comes from PolyCog's server. ElevenLabs says it can't undo the flag; prepaid credit or any paid plan avoids it (step 2).

A voice with the voice_id … was not found.404 · voice_not_found · PolyCog shows "That voice isn't on your ElevenLabs account."

The voice isn't on your ElevenLabs account any more: it was deleted there, or it's a Voice Library voice that was never added. In ElevenLabs, open the voice and add it to My Voices, or pick another voice in the speaker's menu. Settings › Narration Voices in PolyCog lists what's saved.

Too many concurrent requests · System busy429 · a rate limit · PolyCog shows "ElevenLabs is busy. Try again in a moment."

Each ElevenLabs plan can make only a few voice requests at once, and the free plan has the fewest. PolyCog plays one narration at a time, so this usually means another app is using the same key, or ElevenLabs is busy. Wait a few seconds and press the speaker again.

ElevenLabs is down, or didn't answer500 · 503 · a timeout · PolyCog shows "ElevenLabs didn't answer. Try again shortly."

It isn't your key or your credit. Try again shortly; a very long answer on a slow day can also run out of time, so try a shorter one. status.elevenlabs.io shows ElevenLabs' incidents.

Model not found · unsupported model400 · 404 · model_not_found · PolyCog shows "ElevenLabs didn't accept PolyCog's voice model."

PolyCog is narrating on its shared key, which means yours isn't saved in this browser, or its switch is off. Check Profile › Keys › ElevenLabs API key (step 4).

The verification email didn't arrive, or sign-in keeps asking againsigning up by email

It comes from ElevenLabs <no-reply@…> with the subject "Verify your email for ElevenLabs". ElevenLabs says to allow 5 minutes, then check Spam, or choose Resend once its countdown ends. After Verify email, "Almost there! Please sign in once more…" is expected: sign in with the same email and password and it's done. Or go back and choose Sign up with Google.

Where's my key?closed the box before copying

ElevenLabs shows a key only once. On API Keys, choose + Create Key, make another one the same way (step 3), and copy it this time. Then delete the one you lost from its ⋯ menu. A new key costs nothing.

ElevenLabs charged my card againauto top-up or a plan renewal

Either Auto Top Up is on, or you're on a monthly plan, which renews each month. Auto Top Up is off until you switch it on; its form pre-fills "top up by $20 when the balance drops below $10", with an optional monthly spend cap. Switch it off under Subscription › Billing, and cancel a plan there too (you keep it to the end of the month). Invoices are there and in your email.

What is ElevenLabs, and why does PolyCog use it?

ElevenLabs makes AI voices that sound close to human. PolyCog uses its Flash voice model to read answers aloud: the speaker button on any answer, debate round or synthesis. You pay ElevenLabs at its own prices, and PolyCog adds nothing.

Do I need my own key for narration?

Not to start. PolyCog Pro narrates in six built-in voices on PolyCog's own key, up to a daily allowance. Your key removes the limit and adds every voice on your ElevenLabs account, clones included.

Is ElevenLabs free?

There's a free plan with 10,000 credits a month, about 20,000 characters (20 minutes) of PolyCog narration. But over the API, free accounts can't use most Voice Library voices, and ElevenLabs sometimes blocks free accounts used from shared servers like PolyCog's. That's why this guide adds a little prepaid credit.

A plan or prepaid credit?

Prepaid credit if you only want narration: you pay once ($10 minimum), it lasts a year, and nothing renews. Per character of narration the Starter plan costs the same ($6 a month for about 120,000 characters), but it renews every month and unused credits expire after two months; it also adds a commercial licence and instant voice cloning. Plan credits are used first, then prepaid.

Can PolyCog read in my own cloned voice?

Yes. Make the clone in ElevenLabs (instant cloning needs the Starter plan or above), then in PolyCog open Settings › Narration Voices › Import from ElevenLabs… and add it. You can give each bot its own voice there.

Does ElevenLabs credit expire?

Prepaid credit lasts 12 months from purchase. A plan's monthly credits roll over for up to two months while you stay subscribed, and are lost if you cancel or downgrade. Refunds: within 14 days, and only if none of that payment's credit was used.

Is it safe to give PolyCog my key?

PolyCog sends it only to ElevenLabs: when you save it (a three-character test), press a speaker or import voices. It's kept in your browser, and encrypted if you turn on key sync. Restricted to Text to Speech and Voices: Read, it can't clone, change or delete anything on your account. With Auto Top Up off, the $10 you bought is the most it can ever cost. ElevenLabs switches a key off by itself if it's found leaked in public, and you can switch it off or delete it on API Keys at any time.
